Halloween

Another October 31st is almost here! I can’t believe it. Just last week we were having warm fall weather which was more like summer and here we are, a few days past our first substantial snowfall of the season. September has flown by and our first major family event of the holiday season, which is traditionally cold, is upon us. It’s just over 2 weeks until October 31st!

It’s not a good thing to get a ton of snow before the leaves fall off the trees, just in case you ever wonder about that.

Halloween is a great opportunity to make an impact, small though it may be. I have a strong dislike for most things “Halloween” but we don’t avoid the holiday altogether. What other time do people willingly come banging on the door begging for handouts? ;) It’s really hard for me to pass up a chance like that.

Back when Homer was about 2, he was scared spitless by a hellish mask someone was wearing. I wasn’t anti-halloween yet at that time but, having seen other little kids scared half to death, I did have to ask myself why I thought he’d be scarred for life if he didn’t go trick-or-treating. I did incense at least one person when someone close to me told her that we would not be taking the kids out one year. I don’t remember her exact wording but she was upset that our children weren’t going to participate in this “rite of childhood”. Doing what we do, Homer and the other kids have come to look forward to what we do for Halloween, even in the “face” of costumes that would’ve previously caused them to break out into a cold sweat. They still dress up most of the time and they have a lot of fun passing out treats but our focus is less on the hellish and more on our Hope.
I’m trying to decide if I should invest in a costume of my own this year. I probably won’t but it would be fun to dress up.

Well, gotta run. My Mom just had surgery and needs to run to the lab for some tests. They need to borrow my vehicle which sits up higher than theirs and won’t cause her to tear her incision open trying to get out of it. Abdominal surgery is a lot of fun.

About The Asterisk

*Real names of ordinary individuals are almost never used here unless The Named have used them here or on their own blogs.

Specific geographic locations are also rarely used, regardless of what other bloggers do on their own blogs.

*The Asterisk here means, "It's all fun and games until somebody loses an identity." Or worse.
