Halloween

Another October 31st is almost here! I can’t believe it. Just last week we were having warm fall weather which was more like summer and here we are, a few days past our first substantial snowfall of the season. September has flown by and our first major family event of the holiday season, which is traditionally cold, is upon us. It’s just over 2 weeks until October 31st!

It’s not a good thing to get a ton of snow before the leaves fall off the trees, just in case you ever wonder about that.

Halloween is a great opportunity to make an impact, small though it may be. I have a strong dislike for most things “Halloween” but we don’t avoid the holiday altogether. What other time do people willingly come banging on the door begging for handouts? ;) It’s really hard for me to pass up a chance like that.

Back when Homer was about 2, he was scared spitless by a hellish mask someone was wearing. I wasn’t anti-halloween yet at that time but, having seen other little kids scared half to death, I did have to ask myself why I thought he’d be scarred for life if he didn’t go trick-or-treating. I did incense at least one person when someone close to me told her that we would not be taking the kids out one year. I don’t remember her exact wording but she was upset that our children weren’t going to participate in this “rite of childhood”. Doing what we do, Homer and the other kids have come to look forward to what we do for Halloween, even in the “face” of costumes that would’ve previously caused them to break out into a cold sweat. They still dress up most of the time and they have a lot of fun passing out treats but our focus is less on the hellish and more on our Hope.
I’m trying to decide if I should invest in a costume of my own this year. I probably won’t but it would be fun to dress up.

Well, gotta run. My Mom just had surgery and needs to run to the lab for some tests. They need to borrow my vehicle which sits up higher than theirs and won’t cause her to tear her incision open trying to get out of it. Abdominal surgery is a lot of fun.

Oh go on! You should get a costume of your own, it’d be a scream (s’cuse the pun)! PS hope your Mum gets better soon… agreed re well any kind of surgery. I had some early this year and spent 3 months on crutches afterwards so I empathise with your Mum!

    Cheers

Thank you for your kind comments on my site. I am in Winnipeg, Man. Canada. From the way you talk of the snow, I almost assume you are also Canadian. Winter is on the way.
I just hope it holds off until after halloween, for the kids to have their fun. Isn’t it strange how 364 days of the year we tell our kids not to take candy for strangers. Then suddenly on that one day, we tell them to go and ask for it.
Vi and I both enjoy seeing the little kids at the door in their cute costumes. One day of the year gives them a little extra joy. I agree though about somethings being just to scary for the little ones. Get yourself the costume, bet you will have a blast.

Well, guys, if I’m not flat broke from getting my car repaired, I just might get one! My kids would get an enormous kick out of that. I think I could find a pattern for a good one but the kind of costume I’d make would have tons of fabric. I was thinking of Eowyn (from Lord of the Rings) and if I did a dress like hers, the kids would be forced to fend for themselves day and night (they might enjoy that!) from now until Dooms, er, Halloween.

Bill, I’m actually one country to the south of you, and west of Ontario, in Michigan. I bet it gets much colder where you are! :)
