Sarah the Guinea Pig

Today started out regular enough. I’m helping with a baby shower for my cousin and I’m making the cake. I attempted to make fondant yesterday (it is the flat-iced look for a cake like this one), which turned out cement-like but crumbly, and had planned to make the cake today using some very expensive store bought fondant.

We had quite a storm in SW Michigan last night. Over 80,000 people are without power. Our power was shut off for a few hours so that the utility co. could do some repairs without getting electrocuted. It’s back on now but most of our area still is without power.

Shortly after the power went out, things were very quiet. Too quiet. Homer said, “Mom, you better come and see Sarah. She just dragged herself out of her house.” The Sarah Pig, the little guy’s girl, had a little pink plastic house in her cage that was her sanctuary from anything scary.

I walked over to Sarah’s cage and opened the door. Her custom was to jump nervously and, if she wasn’t already in her house, she’d run into it. Strange. She’d stand there and let me scratch under her chin from outside the cage, but the second someone would stick a hand in there, she’d run into her house or run in circles.

Anyway, this time when I stuck my hand in there, she didn’t do anything. I took her house out so that I could have a look at her. She was very obviously ailing. :( The Little Guy started crying. I was already crying. I went and got a towel and picked her up and wrapped her up in it. She wasn’t herself. She wouldn’t take any water or, her favorite, alfalfa.

For a few minutes after we took her out of her cage, she seemed uncomfortable, very week and not herself. We finally all stopped and prayed for her, that God would either heal her or let her go so she wouldn’t have to suffer any longer. Almost as soon as we said “Amen”, she calmed down. I handed her to The Little Man . He held her and gently stroked her head for a few more minutes. When I checked on her again, her little heart had stopped beating.

I called my Mom and Dad and told them. My Mom liked Sarah and always held her whenever she came over. Besides that, my parents can relate to heart breaking pet loss. They’re pet people. They came over and we wrapped Sarah up in some soft cloths, put her in her “casket” and had a funeral for her in the backyard. We buried her by the hostas next to Rocky.

We’re expecting another storm tonight with the potential for more high winds so the baby shower was canceled. What a relief! It’s nice to not have to deal with that today.

Poor Sarah. If Guinea Pigs go to heaven, I’m sure she’ll be there. Thank You, God, for blessing us with Sarah.  Please comfort my little man.
