Gluten Free: Rice Dream and Kool Aid

I have about 1 minute and 45 seconds to post so I’ll try to be brief about a couple of recent discoveries in the challenging world of Gluten Free Living.

For those of you who have been avoiding using Rice Dream brand rice milk because of cross contact with gluten in the manufacturing process, I can vouch for the new label stating that it is now Gluten Free! I bought GF RD about a month ago and had no reaction to it. Yay! I was so excited to have a non soy “milk” that I was careless the next time I purchased an entire case of the stuff. I didn’t read the label and it turned out to be the previously glutenous kind. It didn’t phase me until after nearly 3 or 4 days of nausea and abdominal discomfort that I might’ve gotten the old Rice Dream. I made what I thought was gfcf vegan buttercream frosting over the weekend. After grazing on the leftover frosting for a couple of days – hey, I’ve been good for so long that I have been feeling down about not being able to eat food that actually satisfies a craving, it occurred to me that I might’ve picked up old RD. I ran to the fridge, grabbed a carton and sure enough! It didn’t say gluten free anywhere. *sigh* I’m starting to feel more like a human being today. It’s nice to know I wasn’t losing my mind and that there was a problem!

In other news, Kool-Aid is now being labeled Gluten Free. I’m interested in finding out if gluten was ever a problem in Kool-Aid they just added that to the label.

My time is gone and I need to wrap this up. Both Rice Dream and Kool Aid have “Gluten Free” on their newer labels, though there is still product on the shelf without the GF label. I know that Rice Dream was problematic before for people with CD, but I don’t know about the Kool-Aid. If anyone knows, could you drop me an email please? mrsnicklebee at gmail dot com Thanks!

Kool-aid has not, to my knowledge, ever contained gluten. At least not during the past 6 years.

Thanks for the comment, Melanie. :) I look forward to purchasing something besides grape and black cherry Kool Aid now, since that’s all that is left that is labeled gluten free by the time I get to the Kool Aid rack. :)
