Darwin and Obama

On Darwin

A couple of weeks ago, Karen Joy shared a link to Ben Stein’s upcoming documentary, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. From the Expelled Blog:

“Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” isn’t a Hollywood movie.

This is real life in America, the land of the free…and the home of the brave. It isn’t about “religious nuts,” it isn’t about politics… and it certainly isn’t only about science.

It is about America, and the unseen silent hand of repression that is taking hold of science, in our public universities and government laboratories.

I am very much looking forward to seeing this film when it comes out in the spring! I don’t think I will be waiting for this one to come out on dvd.

Ken Ham issues invitation to the Expelled tour.

Karen Joy, I will be emailing you at some point about that banner,
but what I really want to know is how you posted that video
on WordPress! I’ve seen videos on other blogs
but have never been able to do it myself.

On Obama

Thanks to Daja for the link to Milehimama’s “Underdog Day” post. Watch the video. Bill O’Reilly is interviewing Jill Stanek. It’ll make you sick. Or at least I hope it makes you sick. It makes me sick.

When you’ve finished there, check out this blog entry on Jill Stanek’s website. Amazing! (More evidence that science does not have all the answers!!)

“But abortion is just one issue.”

Kwestions from Kelsey

These came from Kelsey’s Questions from Alabaster post.

1-If you could be any movie or literary character who would you? What is it about that person which appeals to you most?

Off the top of my head, I would have to say Anne Shirley. She was bold, intelligent and made big, usually public, goofs. I could easily be friends with someone like her. I also appreciated her drama and word usage.

2-As a child, which person in your life had the greatest impact on you either for good or bad?

My mother, without question.

3-What values or characteristics do you admire most?

In a Christian, godliness. In a Christian and everyone else, honesty, self control, self discipline, faithfulness, boldness, thoughtfulness.

4-Would you rather be smart or have common sense? Why?

I would rather have common sense. I know people who are very smart and have no common sense. How smart is that? They parrot facts and figures but can’t seem to attach relevance to those things in the everyday. People with common sense are more capable of increasing in wisdom and knowledge.

5-Which is the most apt to touch you deeply, poetry, music, or a picture?

Assuming the exposure to both being equal, there would be a tie between music and a picture. Under everyday circumstances, it would be music because I hear it more. I love music and I associate most of the music I’ve heard with certain life events or time periods.

By the way, Kelsey, I’m very sorry that Mother’s Day holds such awful memories for you.  I’m so sorry about that whole situation.  May God give you that peace that passes understanding.

Seasonal Coolness, or “My Mom is Cool”

I love this new theme. I wish I had seen it sooner! Not that I’ve had time for anything extra lately!

Didn’t get my Christmas letter done. Doesn’t matter because I didn’t have time to do Christmas cards anyway. I think I’ll still send them, but next week.

I felt compelled to ask my Mom for help with the quilt because the house is going to hen. (”Hen” = A kinder, gentler exclamation which my grandfather used.) The quilt may or may not be done by late Christmas Eve, in time for Mrs. Claus and the Claus Mother In-Law to deliver it and a couple of things the nieces and nephew left behind after our family party tonight. Original Artwork

If only doctors’ offices had artwork like this, Drawn By Hand, I think kids would have far less stressful appointments.  They’d be too preoccupied with looking at these lively and colorful drawings to be upset by large nurses coming to assault them with long needles or oversized Q-Tips.

Note to Greeting Card companies:   I would buy cards, wrapping paper, and/or gift bags with  the Artist’s characters on them.

Note to the Artist:  I would buy cards, wrapping paper, and/or gift bags with your characters on them.  Consider offering some of your own (Blank stationary!  I forgot blank stationary! Remember, a pictures says a thousand words anyway. ;)) until the lady with the piles of less interesting other stuff on her desk contacts you.

Egg Free Fruitcake

This is not for those of you who gag at the mere thought of the stuff.  Maybe my taste buds are goofed up but I like the stuff but haven’t been able to eat it in years due to a moderate - severe allergy to eggs.

I have here a recipe for no-egg fruitcake of unknown origin.  If it’s infringing on a copyright by being here, sorry about that and please let me know asap:  mrsnicklebee at yahoo dot com

How to make eggless fruit cake:
This is a delicious fruit cake which is suitable for people cannot or do not wish to eat eggs. Obviously in the past when eggs were very expensive this would have been a more economical fruit cake.

Ingredients
2 cups self raising flour
1 teaspoon mixed spice
1/2 level teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup butter
3/4 cup dried mixed fruit
1/2 cup sugar
12 tablespoons hot water
1/2 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
flaked almonds
(see measure conversions for more information)

Method
- Put the mixed spice, nutmeg, butter, dried mixed fruit, sugar and water into a saucepan.
- Place the over a medium heat and stir the mixture until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved.
- Bring to the boil and then simmer for 3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and cool until lukewarm.
- Add the bicarbonate of soda and stir.
- Put the flour into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the center of it.
- Pour the lukewarm mixture into this.
- Mix well and pour into a greased cake tin.
- Smooth the top of the mixture and sprinkle with a few flaked almonds.
- Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 1 hour 15 minutes at 185 degrees centigrade (see temperature conversions).
- Turn onto a wire rack to cool
